Shiraz is the town in which two of Iran's greatest poets are buried; Hafez and Saadi. Its mediterranean climate, scented by orange blossoms and coloured by the brightly coloured clothes of the Qashqai tribespeople who can be seen there, give it a cosmopoitan feeling which is absent from the other great cities of Iran. In the 19th century it was the capital of Iran under the Qajar Shahs.
