Isfahan is one of ten cities designated by UNESCO as a universal heritage. There has been a city here since biblical times. Isfahan stands at the tip of a plateau which is watered by the Zayandeh, a river formed from the snows of the Zagros mountains. In the 18th century it was the capital of Iran under the Safavid Shahs.
