Formal Gardens

Persian formal gardens range from the carefully crafted settings for palaces such as Chehel Sotoon or the Naranjestan Palace on the right to amenity planting which was started by Shah Abbas with the reconstruction of Chahar Bagh.
The 19th century Naranjestan palace in Shiraz was formerly the Governor's residence. The formal planting shows European influence in its use of bedding which contrasts with the ornate watercourse in the centre. Note the Omar Khayyam rose on the right.
