Traditional Private Gardens

Traditional Persian gardens are built round the pool which can be of any size and is normally set in the centre of a small courtyard. Here there is a simple planting of antirrhinums at one end of the pool. The pool serves as a kind of focus: its primary purpose used to be the provision of water but is now required to humidify the atmosphere.
Providing water for more than a handful of plants in carefully tended small beds is not really feasible in the dry climate of major cities such as Tehran where this woman was photographed in the garden of her home.

A rectangular pool forms the focus of this traditional town garden in Tehran.
