Pigeon Tower
The road that leads east out of the city on the southern side of the Zayandeh, crosses the huge plain which
is irrigated by the river and green with crops of every kind. The soil here is fertile and it is little wonder that
there are a large number of pigeon towers, and even a village called "Pigeon Town" - Kabutar
Abbad. A full discussion of the origins and economic importance of pigeon towers is to be found elsewhere. This one, by the side of an irrigation channel on the
northern side of the road is a fine example of the more crenellated style, while the ones by the Zoroastrian
Atashgah, or Fire mountain are less heavily ornamented, and more like fortifications.
