Masjed-e-Jomeh - The Porch of
Omar
In the north-eastern corner of the mosque there is an area which is known as the 'Suffeh-e-Omar', after
Omar Ibn-e-Abdulaziz, who was a Governor of Isfahan. Its purpose is not altogether clear; it
incorporates a prayer chamber and what was probably a madrasah or theological college. The courtyard in
which this picture was taken is some 25m in width and about 65m long. Construction of this part of the
mosque appears to have taken place in the latter part of the fourteenth century and there are excellent
examples of faience mosaic, including a
pair of fine paeonies in the spandrels above the entrance to the prayer chamber.

Wilber where translations of some of the inscriptions are given which assist in the dating.
